Buddha Art Fair is the annual art fair of the Buddhist Order of Korea. In 2023, it took place between 30 March 2023 and 2 April 2023 and spotlit works from artists working with various mediums and techniques.
For many centuries, Buddhism has been the dominant spiritual tradition in most parts of Asia, including Korea, and has had a a strong influence on the countries' cultural, artistic and intellectual lives. As it traveled across the continent, it came into contact with many different mentalities and peoples who interpreted the doctrine through their perspective, refined some of the subtle points and added their own original ideas.
Buddhism is unique among world religions in that it is markedly psychological. It is not concerned with explaining the origin of the world or the nature of the Divine but instead focuses on the human situation, suffering and frustration. In a sense, Buddhism is closer to psychology than to metaphysics.
The essential doctrine is expressed in the Four Noble Truths.
The First Noble Truth states that everything around us is impermanent and transitory. The Universe is in a constant state of flux. Flow and change are the basic features of life. The Second Noble Truth explains that human suffering arises as a result of our refusal to accept this fact. People tend to look for solidity and cling to things that turn out to be transitory which causes pain and suffering. In searching for solidity we go against the basic fact that reality is fluid. The Third Noble Truth states that ending suffering and frustration is possible. The liberation from the vicious circle of pain is called Nirvana and refers to a state of consiousness beyond the rational logical mind that defies further description. The Fourth Noble Truth contains Buddha's prescription to reach Nirvana, the Eigthfold Path of self-development. It elaborates on the rules for the Buddhist way of life, which is the Middle Way between opposite extremes.
